WHO WE ARE
Welcome to WALK RUTLAND, a program of the Rutland Area Physical Activity Coalition (RAPAC) dedicated to getting people in every town in Rutland County to walk more! The idea is simple—we match folks who want to start walking with people who are already taking daily walks. It’s fun, it’s social, and it feels good to walk with your neighbors.
Why walk? Well, simply, it will make you feel better. Moderate physical activity performed most days of the week for 30 minutes can significantly improve your health.
Approximately 45% of adult Vermonters do not achieve the recommended amount of physical activity. In fact, 18% of all adults are not active at all, and 73% of Vermont students do not exercise moderately five or more days per week and they spend three or more hours per school day watching TV, playing video games or using the computer.
It is easy to join and get started with the WalkRutland program. We have teams established in many towns throughout the county. You are welcome to join an existing team or walk by yourself, either way as a member of WalkRutland you will receive support and encouragement to keep you walking throughout the year.
Join and Get Moving! Check this site often, as new walks are added all the time! We are always looking for people willing to “lead” walks in their towns. It’s easy to be a volunteer walk leader. YOU tell us the time and the place of a walk that you take regularly — WE publicize the info so your neighbors can join you if they want.
It's that simple! All you need to do is: 1. Walk yourself on a regular schedule at a regular place, both of which YOU set. 2. Be willing to talk with people about your walking plans. 3. Be willing to accommodate people who might need to walk at a slower pace or for shorter distances occasionally. 4. Be willing to help arrange a sub to cover those days you might not be able to walk, so that the walk will still go on as scheduled. WALK RUTLAND and RAPAC will publicize your walking plan on this website and in local media.
